At the docks you can walk alongside the water to admire the wetland and its partially submerged trees and wildlife. The docks are floating boardwalks that extend out onto the southern portion of the lake.

The Lake Lenexa Loop Trail offers a delightful and varied hiking experience, circling the clear waters of Lake Lenexa within Black Hoof Park. You'll traverse a mix of paved paths, gravel, and dirt trails, with boardwalks adding to the charm, all while enjoying Lake Lenexa Loop Trail scenic views. The northern section is mostly flat and paved, while the southern half, after crossing the dam, introduces moderate elevation changes on a dirt surface, winding through shaded forests and open areas. This easy 2.5-mile (4.0 km) loop, with a gentle 107 feet (33 metres) of elevation gain, typically takes about 1 hour and 2 minutes, making it a perfect outing for families or a quick nature escape.

When planning your visit, you'll find the Lake Lenexa Loop Trail parking trailhead conveniently located within Black Hoof Park, which also provides amenities like picnic areas and playgrounds. The trail is well-maintained and features benches for breaks, making it accessible for a wide range of hikers. It's an ideal spot for a leisurely stroll any time of day, offering a peaceful retreat without requiring extensive planning.

One of the standout Lake Lenexa natural features is the unique dam and spillway, an engineering marvel that blends art with function through its design, fountains, and sculptures. The park's diverse landscape, encompassing 231 acres of wooded, rolling hills, is a haven for wildlife observation, with opportunities to spot deer, various birds, and even red foxes. Interpretive signs along the route provide fascinating insights into the area's history and ecosystem.
