The closure of the Braakman created one of the youngest Zeeland polders; the Braakmanpolder with an area of 1,525 ha. Of course, the main purpose of the reclamation was to shorten the coastline. But an additional advantage was that about 910 hectares of the new land could be made suitable for agriculture.
