From 1893 until the Maxhütte closed, the production residues were transported to the so-called "Schlackenberg" and deposited there.
After the Maxhütte closed, the Free State of Bavaria took over legal and technical responsibility for the Schlackenberg. From 2005 to 2012, the government of Upper Palatinate carried out the urgently needed remediation of the former Maxhütte waste disposal site. This was necessary because of the dust drifts, the groundwater pollution in the surrounding area caused by the landfill, the oil-containing sludge ponds and the obvious stability problems in some areas of the landfill.
