This beautiful levee trail, much less popular than its cousin on the opposite bank of the river, is paved from Algiers all the way to Hahnville with just two interruptions that are moderately easy to circle around. Being less frequented and quite well-paved turn it into a great route for training sessions.

Embark on a journey along the Mississippi River Trail, where you'll find yourself cycling atop vast levees, offering unparalleled views of the iconic river. This route provides a unique perspective of the landscape, transitioning from natural riverbanks to urban backdrops, including glimpses of the historic Algiers Point Historic District. The terrain is largely flat, making it an accessible yet rewarding experience for those who appreciate long, scenic rides.

Planning your visit is straightforward, as this section of the Mississippi River Trail is predominantly paved and often separated from vehicle traffic, ensuring a peaceful ride. While specific trailhead parking isn't detailed, numerous access points along the levee system are available. For the most comfortable experience, consider cycling during the cooler seasons, and always bring ample water for this extensive route.

What makes this trail truly stand out is its designation as part of the US Bicycle Route 45, highlighting its importance for scenic travel and its connection to the Great River Road. It offers a blend of natural beauty, historical richness, and cultural immersion, providing unique vantage points of the Mississippi River from dedicated causeways and levee tops. This segment is a fantastic way to experience the river's grandeur and historical significance.

Cycle through the wild wetlands of Louisiana on the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve route, where you'll find yourself immersed in bayous, swamps, and dense forests. The scenery shifts from towering bald cypress trees draped in moss to palmetto stands, offering a glimpse into the unique atmosphere of the Mississippi River delta. Keep an eye out for alligators, nutria, deer, and over 300 species of birds as you pedal through this diverse ecosystem.

This moderate road cycling route covers 50.1 miles (80.6 km) with a gentle 74 feet (23 metres) of elevation gain, taking about 3 hours and 22 minutes. Be aware that the Barataria Preserve, a significant part of the park, is undergoing reconstruction until February 2026, with many internal trails closed. Access is mainly limited to the Twin Canals parking lot, and some trails are for foot traffic only, meaning you'll need to park your bike to explore those sections.

What makes this area special is the chance to connect with the natural and cultural heritage of the Mississippi River delta. The rich biodiversity and unique wetland landscape provide an exploratory experience beyond just a physical challenge. It's a fantastic option for nature enthusiasts and those seeking a flat, scenic ride away from city bustle.
