Lake Lucero may only be hiked with via park ranger-led tour. The tour costs $8 for adults, takes three hours, and includes a historical reenactment.
Lake Lucero is within an area shared with the White Sands Missile Range and the entrance is blocked behind a guarded gate when tours are not active.
