It's startling to find a real desert oasis, tucked into a rocky canyon! These palms trees are nourished by the same natural spring they were planted to mark.

Despite the presence of an oasis, please take warnings about carrying enough water in this area seriously. Hikers have perished when they didn't carry enough water and were delayed in getting back.

The Fortynine Palms Oasis Trail invites you on an easy desert hike through classic Joshua Tree scenery. You will navigate boulder-strewn hills dotted with red barrel cacti, experiencing the unique atmosphere of this arid landscape. The route covers 3.1 miles (5.0 km) with an elevation gain of 514 feet (157 metres), typically taking around 1 hour and 29 minutes to complete. Your journey culminates at a lush oasis of California fan palms, a striking contrast to the surrounding desert.

When planning your visit, remember that this trail is not recommended during summer or on very hot days due to the lack of shade. Always bring plenty of water, as the return trip involves climbing back up the elevation you descended, which can be challenging in the heat. To protect the vital ecosystem and wildlife, please stay on designated trails and do not enter the sensitive oasis area. Consider starting early in the morning to avoid the midday sun.

This trail is notable for leading to one of only five desert fan palm oases found within Joshua Tree National Park. As you hike, you will ascend to a ridge offering expansive views of Yucca Valley and Twentynine Palms before descending into Forty-Nine Palms Canyon. The oasis provides a rare glimpse into a verdant microclimate sustained by natural springs, making it a truly special destination in the park.
