Flax has been the most important component of textiles since ancient times. In flax-breaking huts, the fibers were dried, later broken, and then processed into a wide variety of items of daily use or clothing. The flax-breaking hut has no historical connection to the oppidum, but the Celts already cultivated flax and probably had at least similar processing sites.

In the meantime, almost all crushing huts have disappeared, they have been demolished or converted. One, however, has survived to this day. It has been listed as a historical monument and has been restored.

Flax or linen was the most important plant for the production of textiles in Europe. The fibers were extracted from the plant in several steps. the fibers were spun into yarn and in the looms the yarn was processed into linen.
Belfast, in what is now Northern Ireland, was a world flax industrial site. Ship ropes were also made from flax here.
