The oldest parts of the Sint-Willibrordus Basilica in Hulst date from the Middle Ages, but the spire looks remarkably modern. The stylized angel figures under a cross, made of concrete, caused quite a stir in and around Hulst when they were placed on the tower in 1957. Some thought that architect Jan Brouwer had made a design that was much too modern, others praised the symbolism in it.
