It commemorates a catastrophe that happened at this point in Eisenach, when a French ammunition transport exploded for unknown reasons on the way back to France on the evening of September 1st, 1810. The explosion killed 62 people and caused 9 houses to collapse and 24 houses to burn. The city built this iron fountain with black balls in the middle and black hemispheres on the water reservoirs in 1817, which was renovated in 1910.
