After Prussia and the German Confederation withdrew from the Schleswig-Holstein War (1849-1851), the people of Schleswig-Holstein fought alone against Denmark.
In the Battle of Idstedt on July 24th and 25th, the Schleswig-Holstein troops suffered a defeat. The Danish troops were able to bring all of Schleswig back under their control.
The battle is considered the bloodiest that was fought in Northern Europe: out of around 36,000 Danish and 26,000 Schleswig-Holstein soldiers, a total of 6,626 soldiers lost their lives.
