"A postal mile marker, colloquially also called a Saxon post mile marker or simply a post marker, is a milestone that indicates distances and walking times to within one-eighth of an hour. The design of the markers varies depending on the distance." - de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kurs%C3%A4chsische_Postmeilens%C3%A4ule#Distanzs%C3%A4ule
This is a distance marker at the Bautzen Gate. On the way out of town, one could read the stations of the postal routes in the respective direction.
Considering that 1 postal hour = 4.531 km, the logistical effort at that time deserves great respect.
