Hiking

The Mount of Olives in Speyer was once one of the most impressive creations of Gothic architecture. The history of the monument dates back to 1509 and its completion in 1511. During the War of the Palatinate Succession, the monument was mutilated into ruins at the end of the 17th century and was completely destroyed in the French Revolutionary War at the end of the 18th century. It was not until the end of the 19th century that the “Mount of Olives” was rebuilt in a more modest design.

In the southern cathedral garden lies the Mount of Olives, formerly the center of the cathedral cloister. The Speyer sculptor Gottfried Renn created today's figure program in the 19th century; the original depiction from the 15th century was later largely destroyed.
