The center of the old Visby is very clearly marked by the history of an old Hanseatic city with once great importance in trade as well as great wealth.
In the center there were once 15 large old (mostly gothic) churches in the Middle Ages. Except for the cathedral, all churches were demolished by the Lübeckers at the beginning of the 16th century as a result of disputes.
