The former monastery in the northwestern district of St. Jöris was founded around 1274. In 1802 the monastery was abolished under Napoleonic rule. The complex was badly damaged during World War II and today only a fraction of the original complex remains. Thanks to the "Förderverein Zisterzienserinnenkloster St. Jöris", founded in 1982, which acquired the old monastery church from the city of Eschweiler for DM 10.00 in 1983, the monument was saved from decay. In March 1986, the rebuilt monastery church was inaugurated as the town's cultural center .
