Embark on a challenging high-alpine adventure with the Rifugio Larcher and the Careser Lakes Loop, a difficult 8.8-mile (14.1 km) hike that takes you through dramatic mountain scenery. You will gain 2645 feet (806 metres) in elevation, traversing from wooded areas to vast alpine meadows and then into rocky, moraine-filled terrain. The route offers impressive views of the Cevedale mountain group and its glaciers, leading you past a chain of stunning alpine lakes, including the bright blue waters of Lago del Careser.
Plan for approximately 6 hours and 1 minute to complete this demanding loop, which is best undertaken in summer. Be prepared for potentially uneven footing and possible snow patches in higher sections, even during warmer months, so good physical preparation is essential. Many hikers suggest starting from Malga Mare and completing the loop in an anti-clockwise direction to enjoy the best views and light throughout your journey.
This trail is notable for its transition through diverse high mountain ecosystems, from lush meadows to the stark beauty of glacial landscapes. A major highlight is the series of alpine lakes, including Lago delle Marmotte and Lago Nero, culminating in the striking artificial basin of Lago del Careser with its imposing dam.
