    Hiking

Rio Petroso is a small village abandoned since the mid-70s and where it is still possible to find, among different ruins, the ruins of the church, of which elements of the internal structure are preserved.

Prepare for a challenging hike on the Rio Petroso Valley Loop Trail, covering 10.1 miles (16.3 km) with a significant 2150 feet (655 metres) of elevation gain, typically taking around 5 hours and 45 minutes. The route offers a diverse landscape, beginning near the beautiful Cascate del Mulino di Culmolle waterfalls. As you progress towards Rio Petroso, the terrain shifts dramatically, revealing a rugged, almost lunar environment characterized by the unique "marls of Verghereto" and striking erosion patterns. Keep an eye out for heat-loving plants such as helichrysum and red juniper, which thrive in this distinctive setting.

This is a difficult trail that requires a very good level of fitness and sure-footedness. Some sections may even demand specialist equipment, so come prepared. Due to the arid environment and the presence of heat-loving plants, it is not advisable to hike this trail during the peak summer months. For a more comfortable experience, plan your visit during the cooler seasons of the year.

The trail is located within the Foreste Casentinesi, Monte Falterona and Campigna National Park, offering a unique geological and botanical experience. The dramatic landscape transformation from lush waterfalls to an almost lunar terrain makes this route particularly notable in the region. It provides a distinct perspective on the natural forces that have shaped this part of Italy.
