The Lone Star Hiking Trail offers a deep dive into the diverse ecosystems of East Texas, primarily within the Sam Houston National Forest. As the longest continuous hiking trail in the state, it guides you through a "green tunnel" of pine and hardwood forests, past swampy areas with dwarf palmettoes, and alongside rivers like the East Fork San Jacinto. You'll find the terrain mostly flat, but be prepared for wet sections and occasional steep climbs up creek embankments, making it a truly immersive experience.

Planning your visit to this 107.9-mile (173.6 km) route, which involves 3105 feet (946 metres) of elevation gain and takes roughly 44 hours and 53 minutes, is key. The trail is rated difficult, and while accessible year-round, the cooler, less humid winter and spring months are ideal to avoid heat and insects. Primitive camping is allowed on USFS land outside of hunting seasons, but always check current regulations. Parking and trailheads are generally well-marked, but consider your water strategy for longer sections.

This trail is a notable gem for backpackers, offering a significant thru-hiking opportunity without leaving Texas. Beyond its impressive length, the trail is home to diverse wildlife, including deer, hogs, and squirrels, with bald eagles visible in winter and red-cockaded woodpeckers year-round. It's an excellent choice for those seeking a challenging, multi-day adventure in a unique natural setting, providing a genuine backcountry feel close to urban areas.
