There are quite a few wayside shrines (Bildstöcke) in our area. Each shrine has its own story. They are small religious monuments, usually a pillar made of wood or stone standing along paths, bearing a sculptural or painted motif or devotional image (usually the image of a saint, a scene with saints, or the crucified Christ).
The motivation is similar to that of wayside crosses: as an impetus for prayer while on the move, as a sign of gratitude for survived dangers or epidemics, and as a memorial to accidents.
