Neustadt-Zentrum: The fountain is located on the market square, which formed the center of the Neustadt laid out by Prince Walrad. This district was planned with right-angled streets after the great city fire to offer a new home to religious refugees.
Construction and design: The present-day fountain was rebuilt in the 19th century on the site of an older market fountain with a horse trough. It features classicist decoration and resembles the fountain on the Schlossplatz in appearance.
Symbolism: Today, the fountain on the market square symbolizes Usingen's connection with its French partner municipality Chassieu.

Counts and Princes: The Counts of Nassau definitively acquired the Usinger Land in 1405. From 1659 to 1744, the Counts and later Princes of Nassau-Usingen resided here.
Prince Walrad: He was a central figure in the city's history, ruled for 43 years, and was a respected commander as a Field Marshal.
Cityscape: The market square was originally inhabited by French refugees and local members of the Reformed faith. The Protestant Laurentiuskirche is also located nearby.
