The Chippewa River State Trail offers a delightful touring cycling experience, guiding you along the scenic Chippewa River through a mix of river bottoms, open prairies, and wooded areas. You'll enjoy glimpses of sandstone bluffs and, in late summer, vibrant sunflower fields as the route transitions into farm country. This moderate 44.6-mile (71.7 km) trail, with its gentle 500 feet (152 metres) of elevation gain, typically takes about 4 hours and 10 minutes to complete, making it perfect for a leisurely day out.

Planning your ride is easy, with multiple access points and parking available in towns like Eau Claire and Durand. While the trail is mostly paved, some sections feature asphalt emulsion that can be rough, so consider wider tires for a smoother journey. Don't forget that a state trail pass is necessary for cyclists aged 16 and over on most parts of the trail, though city sections are exempt.

As a former rail corridor, the Chippewa River State Trail boasts flat grades, making it accessible for many riders. It's also a vital part of the larger Chippewa Valley Trail System, connecting to other routes like the Red Cedar State Trail and offering extended cycling opportunities. The trail's diverse habitats and continuous riverside views provide a rich natural experience, showcasing Wisconsin's varied ecosystems.
