On May 2, 1945, the prisoners of Sachsenhausen concentration camp were liberated by Soviet and US American troops on the death march near here. To commemorate and as a reminder, the sculpture "The Mother" by the sculptor Gerhard Thieme from Berlin was inaugurated in 1975. Next to the grieving mother are several panels depicting the suffering of the prisoners and their liberation. Every year on a Saturday between May 2nd and 8th, the Sachsenhausen memorial run starts here.

In 1975, the memorial "The Mother" was inaugurated at this historic site on the Stör Canal. It was created by Gerhard Thieme and represents the suffering of the mothers of all nations. Here, for 18,000 of the original 33,000 prisoners who had set out from Sachsenhausen concentration camp, their story of suffering ended when they were liberated by the Red Army and the US Army.
