    Hiking

An 18th century stately home, Holkham Hall is set in beautiful grounds which are free to visit. When the house was built the estate was an empty space but the planting of a multitude of trees has created the woodland park you can see today. The house remains the home of the Earls of Leicester of Holkham but is open to the public on Sundays, Mondays and Thursdays. For further details see the website holkham.co.uk

Embark on the Burnham Overy Staithe, Holkham Hall & Wells-next-the-Sea loop for a diverse hiking experience along the Norfolk Coast. This difficult 15.8-mile (25.5 km) route, with 394 feet (120 metres) of elevation gain, typically takes around 6 hours and 33 minutes to complete. You will traverse varied terrain, from flat grass paths and boardwalks near Burnham Overy Staithe harbour to wide, sandy trails through tranquil pine woodlands. Expect to encounter soft sand along the extensive Holkham Beach and Dunes, which can be strenuous, before reaching the flat tarmac paths approaching Wells-next-the-Sea. The journey offers picturesque views of salt marshes, the grand Holkham Hall, and the unique Holkham Tree Tunnel.

Planning your visit requires attention to tide times, especially if you choose to walk on the beach, as soft sand and strong currents can pose challenges. While some sections are easily accessible, the full loop's length and varied conditions contribute to its difficult rating, requiring very good fitness. The trail incorporates parts of the well-signposted Norfolk Coast Path, making navigation straightforward in many areas. Be prepared for a mix of surfaces, including unpaved paths, gravel tracks, and quiet roads, ensuring you wear appropriate footwear for the varied terrain.

This loop is notable for its rich natural and historical significance. It traverses the Holkham National Nature Reserve, offering excellent opportunities for birdwatching across the salt marshes, where you might spot avocets, shelducks, and little egrets. You will also pass through Burnham Overy Staithe, a charming hamlet with a history as a busy port, reputedly where Admiral Lord Nelson learned to row and sail. The route provides a dynamic experience, transitioning between coastal marshes, vast sandy beaches, serene pine forests, and picturesque villages, showcasing the unique character of the Norfolk Coast.
