Christian Friedrich was the son of a margravial valet born in Eisenach in 1724 and later an innkeeper and brewer, and Johanna Christiane Elisabeth Ebel (1730–1787) from Strausberg. His musical talent was recognized early, as a boy he received organ and piano lessons from the local organist in his hometown. Himmel had been studying theology in Halle since 1785, but he mainly distinguished himself there as a piano virtuoso. He applied to Potsdam as a field chaplain, which gave him the opportunity to play for the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm II, who was himself a passionate cellist. (Source: Wikipedia)
