Surbourg is a commune with 1667 inhabitants in the department of Bas-Rhin in the region of Grand Est in France. Surbourg has a stake in the former Holy Forest and today Haguenauer Forest. In its area, on Surbourger communal grounds, stands the oldest monastery in the Alsace region; it was founded in the 6th century by Arbogast of Strasbourg. The Romanesque church of the later Benedictine monastery has been preserved and today serves as a parish church. It is dedicated to John the Baptist, which is also depicted on the municipal coat of arms.
