The hospital foundation dates back to 1374 and was established by the esteemed Nuremberg patrician family Glockengießer. It served as a social institution for the care of the sick, the elderly, and pilgrims. An integral part of the complex was the Chapel of St. Leonhard, whose remains are visible today as a ruin.

Lauf burned down completely in 1552 during the Second Margrave War. Only the castle and the parish church of St. Leonhard, which is part of the complex of the bell foundry hospital, which now houses the city archive and the city collections, have been preserved. The hospital, built in 1374, was a pious endowment by the Nuremberg citizen Herrmann Kessler, known as the bell founder, and his wife.
