In the years before the Second World War, many scattered "home front" bunkers were built in the Wetterau, but also in the foreland areas of Vogelsberg and Spessart. The bunkers were initially intended as proof of political loyalty, but they were also intended to signal readiness for defense and were used for training purposes. At times the bunkers were even connected into fictitious defense lines with no strategic value whatsoever.
