Zsámbék was first mentioned in 1050. The construction of a Premonstratensian monastery began around 1220.
The St. John's Church of the Premonstratensian monastery from the middle of the 13th century has been preserved as a ruin. It was a three-aisled basilica without a transept until an earthquake in 1763.
