The Herzogsberge Nature Reserve (NSG) is a fascinating piece of nature right on the outskirts of Braunschweig (near Cremlingen and Sickte). It is a prime example of how a former military area can become a valuable refuge for rare species. The area served as a military training ground from 1934 to 2003. Since July 2019, it has been officially designated as a nature reserve (approx. 266 hectares).
