Embark on a difficult 8.1-mile (13.0 km) hike along the Via Estiva, leading you to the summit of Grigna Settentrionale, also known as Grignone. This challenging route involves a significant 5024 feet (1531 metres) of elevation gain and typically takes around 7 hours and 35 minutes to complete. Starting from Colle di Balisio, the path transitions from a comfortable road through a forest, then climbs through alpine sections and meadows with sustained inclines, culminating in steep steps to the summit and Rifugio Brioschi. As you ascend, expansive views open up, offering panoramas of peaks like Pizzo Tre Signori and Grignetta, with the summit rewarding you with a vast vista of the entire Alpine chain, including Monte Rosa.
To tackle this demanding trail, you need very good fitness, sure-footedness, sturdy shoes, and some alpine experience. The route is not recommended for children due to its length and considerable altitude difference. The trail begins near a parking lot at Colle di Balisio, often from the Chapel of Sacro Cuore. Always be prepared for rapidly changing mountain conditions, which can quickly affect visibility and weather, making careful planning essential for a safe and enjoyable experience.
Grigna Settentrionale is a renowned mountain in the Lecco area, often visible from Milan on clear days, making this Via Estiva a popular ascent. At the summit, you will find the Rifugio Brioschi, one of the most well-known refuges in the Lombard Prealps, offering a welcome resting point. The peak also features a glass chapel dedicated to Santa Maria dei Sentieri, a summit cross, and a cylinder pointing out visible peaks and localities, adding to the unique character of this iconic destination.
