Around 750, a chapel dedicated to the holy martyrs Abdon and Sennen was built on the site of today's St. John's Church, which was repaired and expanded several times in the following centuries (e.g. documented in 1492, 1520, 1654, 1712). In 1753 the old and dilapidated predecessor of the Johanniskirche was replaced by a new church designed in the baroque style. The new church burned down to the masonry in 1776 due to a lightning strike. It was rebuilt in 1778 and reopened in 1779.
