Lt Avi Pieter Demuynck was killed when his Mirage 5BR (BR-19) crashed on December 20, 1989 in the woods of Thiers Pays. A stele was erected at the crash site on April 19, 2007.
The pilot on approach to Bierset encountered engine problems and his aircraft threatened to crash into the village of Awirs, but in a final reflex the pilot changed the course of his plane. Unfortunately, he ejected too late and was found dead with his parachute hanging in the trees.
