The building was part of the 1939 World Expo and designed to become an airline terminal afterwards, but due to World War II the whole island was converted to a Navy facility for 55 years.
The Treasure Island museum opened in 1975 with the gigantic mural by Nesbitt covering the entire interior hall. It has been renovated and reopened in 2024, and provides detailed background about the geo-structural challenges of the 30 year project to redevelop Treasure Island from 400 to 6000 residents by 2035, and its adaptations to sea level rise.
