The five-country stele, which commemorates the founding of the first Central German stonemasons' guild in 1464, has its permanent location in front of the Battle of the Nations Monument in Leipzig. The approximately two-meter-high column consists of five segments, one of which was contributed by each of the stonemasons' associations of Bavaria, Brandenburg, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia. The area of rule of the Saxon Elector Frederick II, who in 1464 placed all stonemasons and stone sculptors in his area under his "special protection" in a charter, also included parts of these countries at the time.
