    Hiking

Down a short, out-and-back spur trail off of the main Grandfather Trail and just below Calloway Peak, is an amazing overlook. From here you get great views over the mountains. This is a great detour before or after you summit.

    Grandfather Trail

The Grandfather Trail is an exhilarating and highly technical hike that winds across the rugged ridgeline of Grandfather Mountain, connecting summits like MacRae Peak and Calloway Peak. You'll encounter unique "chutes and ladders" sections, requiring you to climb fixed ladders and use cables to navigate steep rock faces, all while enjoying panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. This difficult 4.4-mile (7.1 km) route, with 905 feet (276 metres) of elevation gain, typically takes around 3 hours and 21 minutes, making it a serious challenge for experienced hikers.

To access this adventure, you'll need to enter the Grandfather Mountain attraction, which requires an admission fee, and can start from the Top Shop or Black Rock Parking Area. Given the trail's strenuous nature and technical demands, proper hiking boots with good traction are non-negotiable. Be ready for rapidly changing weather and strong winds at higher elevations, and consider the Underwood Trail as an alternative if you wish to avoid some of the more intense ladder sections.

What truly sets the Grandfather Trail apart is its reputation as one of the most technical hikes east of the Mississippi, offering an alpine climbing feel without specialized gear. The mountain itself is a biodiversity hotspot, boasting 16 distinct natural ecosystems and home to 73 rare or endangered species. While you're there, don't miss the iconic Mile High Swinging Bridge, a popular attraction near the trailhead that offers another unique perspective of the stunning mountain landscape.

The Daniel Boone Scout Trail offers a truly immersive mountain experience, quickly ascending through varied forest terrain that gradually opens up to expansive views. This difficult 2.9-mile (4.6 km) hike is a relentless uphill battle, gaining 1693 feet (516 metres) of elevation, but the payoff is worth every step as you approach the stunning vistas from Watauga Viewpoint and the exposed summit of Calloway Peak. It's a challenging route that rewards persistent hikers with dramatic mountain scenery.

To tackle this demanding trail, plan to arrive early at the trailhead, especially on busy days, to ensure you find parking. The estimated duration is around 2 hours and 8 minutes, but allow extra time for breaks and enjoying the views. Always check the weather forecast before heading out, as conditions in the mountains can change rapidly, and carry plenty of water for the continuous climb.

Located in Watauga County, this trail is a popular choice for those seeking a strenuous workout and panoramic views without committing to an all-day epic. While it's a tough climb, the relatively short distance makes it an excellent option for experienced hikers looking for a high-intensity, rewarding adventure.

The Profile Trail to Calloway Peak offers a journey through seven distinct natural communities, starting with gentle forest paths and evolving into a rugged, high-alpine climb. You'll traverse dense rhododendron thickets, cross the Watauga River, and eventually find yourself scrambling over rocks and using ladders in a Canadian fir zone. The highlight is undoubtedly the view of the iconic "Grandfather Profile" rock formation and the expansive vistas from Watauga View and Calloway Peak itself, showcasing Linville Gorge and beyond.

Planning your visit requires preparation for this difficult 10.4-mile (16.7 km) hike, which includes 2655 feet (809 metres) of elevation gain and an estimated duration of 7 hours and 49 minutes. The trail is not recommended for small children or inexperienced hikers due to its strenuous nature, especially after Shanty Spring where rock scrambling and cables are necessary. Parking is available at the trailhead, which offers free access to Grandfather Mountain's summit, bypassing the paid entrance for other park areas.

This route is particularly notable as it provides a free access point to the summit of Grandfather Mountain, a significant advantage over other park entrances. The trail itself is a testament to master trailbuilders, with sections featuring hundreds of large boulders artfully arranged into walkways and durable stone steps. Famed naturalist John Muir once praised Grandfather Mountain's scenery as "the finest in America of its kind," a sentiment you'll understand as you ascend through its diverse ecosystems to the panoramic summit.
