Around 1180 the place is known as Ekkartsovve. Today's large community Eckartsau was formed in 1971 from the two market communities Eckartsau and Witzelsdorf and the three village communities of Kopfstetten, Pframa and Wagram on the Danube. Wagram on the Danube, formerly Croatian-Wagram as opposed to Deutsch-Wagram, was created by Croatian colonization after the Turkish invasion of 1529. The pilgrimage site of Kopfstetten was first mentioned in 1233 as Chopstetten. Pframa was first documented as Fruhmanaha in 1025 and is therefore one of the oldest villages in Marchfeld. Witzelsdorf was probably already known as Wizilinesdorf around 1083.
