After the war of 1870/71 – all participants in the war had returned – the people of Steinhude planted an "Oak of Peace" in the square and named the spot "Friedensplatz" (Peace Square). There was also a large folk festival, which is still celebrated annually today as a marksmen's festival. In 1922, the people of Steinhude erected a "War Memorial" in memory of the fallen of World War I. They named the square "Am Kriegerdenkmal" (At the War Memorial).(steinhude-am-meer.de/vor-ort/orte-und-plaetze/die-friedenseiche/)
