The chapel was built in 1648, immediately after the Thirty Years' War. This period was marked by plague, hunger and inflation. The chapel is dedicated to Saint Placidus. It was built by the Prince Abbot of the St. Gallen Monastery. The chapel was primarily used by the abbot and the conventuals who stayed in the Frauenhof opposite. The ridge turret was redesigned in the Baroque style in the 18th century. The chapel became private property in 1807 after the monastery was dissolved and was donated to the Frauenhof Chapel Foundation in 1998.
