Embark on the Grotta dei Pagani Cave Trail (via CAI 318), a difficult hike spanning 8.5 miles (13.6 km) with a significant elevation gain of 4380 feet (1335 metres), typically taking around 7 hours and 36 minutes to complete. You'll wind through pine forests covering the Presolana slopes, eventually reaching high mountain pastures near Baita Cassinelli. As you climb, you'll pass the small Bivacco Città di Clusone and the Cappella Savina, where the landscape opens up with views of Passo della Presolana and Monte Pora.
To begin your journey, you can park near Hotel Spampatti at Passo della Presolana, where the well-marked CAI trail starts. This route connects with Rifugio Rino Olmo, offering a potential stop along the way. Keep an eye out for stone water troughs used by grazing cattle, and listen for the sound of cowbells echoing across the alpine meadows as you hike.
This trail leads you into the heart of the Orobie Bergamasche, where the notable Grotta dei Pagani has attracted visitors for generations. Along the way, you'll encounter the Signore dei Ghiaioni Crucifix, a peaceful spot with its own bell. The route continues through Passo Pozzera and Passo degli Agnelli, providing glimpses into nearby valleys and opening up to expansive views on the other side.
