    Hiking

Lake Gherardesca is a small natural body of resurgent water, what remains of Lake Bientina (or Sesto), the largest lake in Tuscany until the mid-19th century, before this portion of territory was reclaimed by the will of the Grand Duke Leopold II of Lorraine.
At the foot of Monte Pisano, one of the most important wetlands in Tuscany, about 30 hectares have become a special protection area for the protection of water birds.

    Hiking

Was a bit disappointing because the lake was barely visible, you could only look at it from above. On the route along the lake there was 2 meters high vegetation that could not be seen or passed through.

Embark on the Lake Gherardesca Loop, an easy hike that guides you through a serene landscape. This route covers 3.4 miles (5.5 km) with a gentle elevation gain of 190 feet (58 metres), making it a pleasant journey for most. You can expect to complete the loop in about 1 hour and 27 minutes, enjoying views of the tranquil Lake Gherardesca and the distant Monte Pisano as you pass through cultivated fields and quiet woodlands. The varied terrain includes natural trails and dirt tracks, offering a true outdoor feel.

When planning your visit, remember that the path can sometimes be muddy with puddles, especially after rain, so wearing trekking shoes is a good idea. This trail is suitable for various fitness levels, providing a relaxing escape into nature without demanding strenuous effort. Consider starting your hike in the morning to enjoy the calmest atmosphere.

This loop is nestled within the Oasi WWF del Bottaccio, a significant area for wildlife. As you walk, you'll also encounter historical elements like ancient paths and a disused railway station, adding a touch of local heritage to your natural exploration.
