Mullaghcleevaun Summit

Hiking

5.0

(18)

Mullaghcleevaun, or Mullach Cliabháin in Irish Gaelic, is a broad giant characterised by sweeping flanks, peat hags and astonishing views. Its summit pillar stands at 2,785 feet (849 m), making it the second highest point in the Wicklow Mountains National Park, behind Lugnaquillia. An adventure here is rough, rugged and often boggy, one for those who like a challenge.

Perhaps Mullaghcleevaun’s finest feature is its northern corrie, which is adorned by a beautiful pool, Cleevaun Lough. Left behind when ancient glaciers scoured the mountainside, it is the highest natural lake in the national park and a gorgeously serene spot.

A broad giant on the central spine of the magnificent Wicklow Mountains

There are many ways to attain Mullaghcleevaun, including an undulating traverse of what’s known as the ‘boggy ridge’, which usually begins at Sally Gap and takes in Carrigvore, Gravale, Duff Hill, Mullaghcleevaun’s subsidiary east top and the main summit. There are various other ways up, many utilising the R115 Old Military Road for access. The village of Laragh, just east of scenic Glendalough, has a number of accommodation options.

Once up, you are treated to sublime views thanks to its position on the western edge of the range’s spine. To the west are the Blessington lakes, the midlands and South Leinster, while there’s the glorious sight of the Wicklows’ chain stretching away to the north and south.

With deer roaming its green flanks, as well as peregrines and ravens patrolling the skies, there’s plenty of wildlife to enjoy. To conserve this beautiful region, the park authority asks that dogs should be kept on a lead at all times.
