Major General Johan Frederik Classen (1725 - 1792) was an industrialist (and merchant) and manufactured weapons. He was the city and industrialization an important personality. His products included cannons (hence the monument) and mortars, but also cannon balls and gunpowder. Due to the water power that was available here, the Danish metalworking took place here. There is still a smaller steel mill in Frederiksværk today.
