During high tide, the gate can be closed with a metal gate to protect the city from the masses of water.
The gate was built in 1833 to replace an older gate from 1715 and is also called Grote Waterpoort.
On the harbor side of the gate there is a stone with an inscription commemorating the spring tide of 1962.
Since the water gate was modernized in 1970, it can still be used during floods.
