Embark on a moderate hike through the Peak District National Park with the Three Shire Heads loop from Cat & Fiddle. This 6.9-mile (11.2 km) route, taking about 3 hours and 10 minutes, offers diverse terrain and scenic beauty, including open moorland and secluded river valleys. You will gain around 848 feet (259 metres) in elevation, traversing a mix of accessible paths and rough, rocky tracks. The highlight is Three Shires Head, where three counties meet amidst picturesque waterfalls and an 18th-century twin packhorse bridge over the River Dane. Expect lovely views throughout, with exposed sections near the Cat & Fiddle Inn offering vistas back towards Buxton. You will find sections of mature woodland and sheep pasture along the way.
This loop begins from the Cat & Fiddle Inn, one of England's highest pubs. While generally suitable for most skill levels, some sections can be tricky underfoot. It is especially important to be prepared for muddy and slippery conditions if you hike in winter. Good hiking boots are highly recommended due to the rocky and potentially wet terrain. Plan your visit to allow ample time to enjoy the scenery and perhaps a break at Three Shires Head.
Three Shires Head is the trail's most notable feature, a unique geographical spot where Cheshire, Derbyshire, and Staffordshire converge. Its charming waterfalls and historic packhorse bridges make it a popular destination for picnics or even a refreshing paddle. As you hike, you might also encounter historical features like the Danebower Colliery Ventilation Chimney and disused quarries, offering a glimpse into the area's industrial heritage. The trail provides a sense of peace and tranquility, particularly in the secluded river valleys.
