The Schwarzwasser rises in the Bernsdorf community forest near Heide, a district of Wiednitz. As it continues westward, the small river flows partly in Brandenburg and partly in Saxony. In the Ruhland Heath, it forms the border between the two countries. The Saleskbach, which flows in from the heath villages of Cosel, Grüngräbchen and Großgrabe, flows into it on the left. The Schwarzwasser then flows north through Jannowitz and Arnsdorf. It flows into the Schwarze Elster near the town of Ruhland.
