The St. Laurentius Church in Schönberg was built after 1324, after the Bishop of Ratzeburg had finally taken up residence in Schönberg.
The current building had a predecessor, the remains of which can still be seen at the northeast corner of the church. Some of the old stones were reused.

The town church was built in the 14th century in the brick Gothic style. The tower was added in the 16th century. It was damaged by a lightning strike in 1829 and was given its current appearance in 1831.
