The Paul H. Douglas Trail offers a remarkable journey through Indiana Dunes National Park's varied ecosystems, transitioning from wetlands to globally rare oak savannas and towering sand dunes before reaching the expansive shores of Lake Michigan. This easy 3.6-mile (5.7 km) hiking route, with a minimal 49 feet (15 metres) of elevation gain, typically takes around 1 hour and 27 minutes to complete, making it an accessible adventure for most. You'll encounter diverse terrain, from boardwalks to loose sand, and pass by scenic interdunal ponds, offering a rich experience for nature lovers.

When planning your visit, remember that while the trail is generally easy, the sandy sections can make the going feel a bit more strenuous than the elevation gain suggests. It's wise to bring plenty of water, wear sun protection, and dress in layers to adapt to changing conditions between the wooded areas and the open beach. The trail is best enjoyed in spring and summer for wildflowers, or in autumn for vibrant fall colors, and parking is available near the Douglas Center.

What truly sets this trail apart is its exceptional ecological diversity, traversing a globally rare oak savanna maintained by controlled burns to support native plants and wildlife. It's home to an impressive 287 plant species, including the endangered Karner blue butterfly, and offers excellent opportunities for birdwatching. The dramatic shifts from wetlands to savannas, dunes, and finally Lake Michigan provide a highly dynamic and rewarding experience, showcasing the unique geological history of ancient Lake Michigan shorelines.
