The Hengsen reservoir is the smallest of the Ruhr reservoirs. In contrast to the other Ruhr reservoirs, the main course of the Ruhr flows next to the small lake. To fill it, the Ruhr is dammed on the east side of the lake. The lake was created in 1937 and was initially a popular excursion destination, before tourist and agricultural use was increasingly restricted in favor of drinking water supply.
