In the 14th and 15th centuries, the whole of Amersfoort was surrounded by a system of defensive walls, which included several water gates. The Monnikendam Gate was built in the first decade of the 15th century. The name of the gate literally means "monks' gate" and probably comes from the Augustinian order, which probably existed here in the Middle Ages until 1420.
The water gate connects the two banks of the small Heiligenbergerbeek stream. The building consists of two towers on either side of the river and the archway connecting them. Inside there is also a restaurant.
