From Wikipedia: "Until about 2000 years ago, the Neckar flowed northwards in the Upper Rhine Plain through a floodplain landscape with a tangle of meanders, loops, backwaters and silted-up arms between the Rhine in the west and the Odenwald foothills in the east and only flowed into the Rhine north of Darmstadt near Trebur, i.e. about 50 kilometers north of the current mouth in Mannheim."
