In 1867, when Graal and Müritz were still two separate villages, initiated the monastery pastor Friedrich Bunge († 1889 in Garwitz) of neighboring Ribnitz a Kirchneubau in Graal. The various attempts Bunges failed in each case at the upper church authority until Grand Duke Friedrich Franz IV of Mecklenburg-Schwerin heard it and also campaigned for the establishment of a church. Bunge was honored for his perseverance on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the consecration of the church with a memorial stone located in front of the east side of the church.

It was designed on behalf of Grand Duke Friedrich Franz IV and inaugurated on October 18, 1908. Curiously, the tower is not located in the west as usual.
